A round table discussion on Sustainable Thinking, Action and Reflection was organized at Xavier School of Sustainability, Xavier University Bhubaneswar on 26 Feb. 2016.

The event was attended by professionals hailing from different walks of life. It was a melting pot of ideas with specialists from education, medicine, law, corporates and environmental sciences bringing in unique perspectives.

The event was organized in coordination with Wipro Earthian, Wipro’s initiativeto promote sustainability in schools and higher educational institutions.The event started off with a quick introduction followed by a presentation by students of Xavier School of Sustainability, Xavier University Bhubaneswar. Abha Mahapatra, Biswabhushan Samantray and VivekBalachander S, winning team of the Wipro Earthian and T N Koshoo memorial award for best entry in the competition, students of Xavier School of Sustainability. The presentation covered the experience of the students on working for the contest and how they went about with the content for their proposal for the contest.Prof. Dr. Fr. Paul Fernandes, S.J., VC, XUB and Director, XIMB gave the inaugural speech and how Xavier University hopes to build new networks and maintain the bond.Next, Mr. AbhijitZacharia, Manager, Wipro Earthian presented about Wipro’s Earthian Initiative. He expressed his happiness at how states are coming up with higher education institutions in Sustainability and spoke of how Earthian is a movement towards mainstreaming sustainability in education. A major reason sustainability endeavors fail to create the kind of impact they are intended to do is due to gaps in education and awareness on such issues. Institutions should be the drivers of change. The contest aims to create an ecosystem of schools, institutions and partners to drive change being India’s largest sustainability education program covering over 8000 schools and colleges.

After the reflections by the expert panel, a discussion on Sustainability Thinking, Action and Reflection (STAR) was facilitated by Prof. S Peppin, Dean, Xavier School of Sustainability, Xavier University,Bhubaneswar. Reaching out to the bottom rung, moving from thinking to implementation and fostering partnerships among different centres of excellence to find out solutions to sustainability issues emerged as the next plan of action.
