In a novel attempt to increase awareness about the benefits of cycling for health and environment, Cycle Day was organised in the idyllic surroundings of Koramangala on Sunday, the 7th of August with the objective of popularizing cycling within the locality. The event was organised by Praja in Association with the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), Koramanagala 3rd Block RWA and Bengaluru Coalition of Open Streets (BCOS) and supported by the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bengaluru.

The event saw the presence of Shri R. Ramalinga Reddy, Minister of Transport, Karnataka. He stressed upon the fact that cycling as a mode of transport can go a long way in solving Bengaluru’s traffic woes and further lead to health benefits and conservation of the environment. He cited the example of ‘Old days’ when people used to predominantly walk and cycle around, which ensured physical fitness, as opposed to the modern day lifestyle.

The ‘Cycle Day at Koramangala’ began at 8.00 am with a 5.5 km cycle rally around the vicinity and later witnessed activities like Dance, Zumba, Hula hoop, Tug of War and Segway rides which greatly enthused the participants and added to the palpable excitement. These activities together with the cycle rally were conducted and managed by the student volunteers from SIBM Bengaluru along with adequate support from Praja. The event saw the participation of about 700 people and 320 cyclists across different age groups, the youngest being a 3 year old child, looking visibly excited on his new bike.
Smt. V. Manjula, DULT Commissioner and one of the participants stressed upon the health benefits of cycling and was seconded by Ann Jacob, Urban Planner (DULT), who also highlighted the positives that Cycle Day seeks to bring to the city in the long term. Elated by the response, the organisers plan to make this event a monthly affair in the locality.
The student volunteers from SIBM Bengaluru were complimented by Manjari Vishnoi from Praja for their enthusiastic participation and support. The event was sponsored by Big Banyan Roots, Trusted Stay, Play Arena and Hotel Grand Mercure and seeks to expand into other parts of the city as well.
