11th October 2015

XsteC- the Xpressions steering committee of XIMB,XUB as a prelude to Xpressions’15 organized the 10km marathon, X-Athon, today. This was the second year that X-Athon was organized on such a large scale with more than1400 registrations. The Regional Director of SBI Life Insurance, Mr.Anil Bhatt, was the chief guest for the occasion.

11th October is celebrated as the International Day for the Girl Child. This year X-Athon’15 had the theme “Save the girl child- You run, the girl child wins”. Through this theme, awareness was spread amongst the public about the importance of a girl child and also the importance of staying healthy and fit. The amount of Rs.75, 000 that was collected as charity during the registrations was donated to the CRY foundation – Child Rights and You. Welcoming the initiative, Mr. AtindraNath Das, Regional Director CRY East said, “Our experience of working with children for the last three and half decades shows that discrimination against girl children still remains a big concern across the country. Even though the general mindset is gradually changing, several recent research documents show that our girls are still victims of gender-bias embedded in our social psyche. Looking from this lens, XIMB initiative becomes all the more significant and meaningful to us. We do believe that initiatives of this kind will bring in more awareness in the civil society, and will go a long way to make the world a better place for our girl children.” For instance, a recent study reveals that female mortality between 1-59 months exceeded male mortality in 430 out of 597 districts in India, amounting to about 74,000 excess deaths among girls in 2012 alone. AHS 12-13 data shows that in most of the districts in Odisha the scenario is no different, with female child mortality outnumbering male child mortality both in IMR and U5MR indicators.
