Utopia is hosted by the International Relations Committee (IRC) of Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM), Bengaluru. It is one of the largest student events organized in the college. It encourages cultural relationships between Symbiosis and other international universities.

The event coincides with the birthday of our beloved Dr. S.B. Majumdar, founder of Symbiosis Society. The concept of Symbiosis and its motto “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” has been the pillar of DR. Majumdar’s idea of a ‘Home away from Home’ for international students around the world. Utopian land with the perfect cultural harmony and its resonating rhythm, bringing together all nations was his very precious dream. UTOPIA 2015 celebrates his great vision and calls for ‘UTOPIA – Rhythm of Nations’!

Bengaluru, Karnataka, July 31, 2015

In what turned out to be a great turnout of participants, Bishop Cotton Women’s Christian College (BCWCC) and Christ University emerged victorious in Utopia 2015, the international cultural festival of Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bengaluru.

Close to 400 students from colleges across the city made the event a grand success. The students represented a wide diaspora of over 15 nations including Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Rwanda, Nigeria, Mauritius, Nigeria, Tanzania, Bangladesh and Iran. The participation resonated the theme of the event: Rhythm of Nations.

The sprightly team from BCWCC bagged the top prize in the Fashion Show while the Afghan contingent from Sambhram College came second. St. Francis De Sales College (SFS) bagged the third prize.

“We were tensed before the event since the competition seemed intense. Our theme for the fashion show was heritage. But we were relieved after winning. The different themes by other participants promoted many cultures,” said Jona Dewan of BCWCC.

Prathap Chandran, creative manager, Myntra, the judge for the fashion show, said, “It was a good show with a lot of curated collections. There was good co-ordination with appropriate choreography by the teams and the energy levels maintained were high. It was a tough call to decide on the winners.”

A team from Christ University then took top honours in ‘Homeward Bound’, an event that allowed participants to showcase their talent in performing arts. Acharya College finished runners-up. The event was judged by noted Kathak danseuse Smitha Srinivasan and Tilak Prabhu of Steps Dance Studio.

Other informal events included All in One (Minute to win it!) and Stage Lit (Open Mic Event) which drew the audience in large numbers.

“The event was the perfect platform to meet students from other countries studying the city and learn about their cultures,” said Abdul Qadir, an Afghan student from Sambhram College, who enjoyed with his contingent of friends.

Saiksha Palikey, from Jyoti Nivas College, said, “We had a lot of fun through the day. It is my first Utopia and it has been memorable.”

Thanking the participants, Professor V.G Venkatesh, the faculty coordinator for Utopia said, “We had wonderful performances depicting various cultures. The participation was very encouraging and showed that Utopia is among the favourite college cultural events in the city. This is what Symbiosis International University stands for, to promote global harmony.”
