With the aim to educate students about the benefits of yoga and incorporate a healthy lifestyle, IIM Bodh Gaya celebrated the International Day of Yoga on 21st June 2022. It marked the first offline event for the current academic year, and everyone participated with a lot of enthusiasm and vigour. The day saw massive participation from IPM, MBA, and Ph.D. students, along with Dr. Vinita S. Sahay, Director, IIM Bodh Gaya, faculty, and staff.
This year’s theme for International Day of Yoga (IDY) is “Yoga for Humanity”, which highlights the importance of Yoga in coping with the challenges related to health, social isolation and stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the Ministry of Ayush had chosen IIM Bodh Gaya as one of the 75 Iconic Locations across the country to celebrate IDY 2022. And, the Institute could live up to the expectations by celebrating the day in a grand manner.
Yoga has gained tremendous popularity not only in India but across the globe for maintaining both physical and mental well-being. Each Yogic activity is a key to improving flexibility, strength, balance and attaining harmony. With the discipline espousing mindfulness, moderation and perseverance, Yoga also encourages people to have a healthy lifestyle. It incorporates meditation, breathing exercises, and stretches to allow stress reduction, relaxation, and rejuvenation. It is considered as one of the greatest means of self-development and espouses the mind-body relationship. If the mind is healthy, the body becomes healthy too. By practicing Yoga, a student can be healthy in body and mind and, consequently, excel in his/her academics and all other spheres of life. If the current generation embraces Yoga, many complexities related to life can be solved very easily.
As a run-up to the International Day for Yoga, IIM Bodh Gaya celebrated ‘Yoga Week’ from 16th June to 20th June that included Yoga practice sessions, meditation sessions, and quiz, drawing and sports competitions for students and staff.
The celebrations for IDY 2022 began with soulful chanting of slokas by our IPM students. In her welcome speech, Dr. Vinita Sahay, Director, IIM Bodh Gaya, emphasized on accepting Yoga as a way to achieve discipline in life. While addressing the batch, she also mentioned the importance of the day and how Yoga plays a major role in shaping a healthy and a mindful student.
The Director’s address was followed by a prize distribution ceremony for the various competitions held during the preceding Yoga Week. The addressal of Shri Narendra Modi, Honourable Prime Minister of India, for IDY 2022 was streamed online at the venue, live from Mysuru.
The highlight of the event was a live Yoga session demonstrated by Dr. Poornima Mishra, a professional Yoga trainer and physiotherapist. All the students, faculty and staff actively participated in the session. The event concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
