    Arakansas Inc is a young startup that has recently hired you and your team to help them in selecting two candidates from several applicants. Arkansas is looking to hire for two roles : Project Manager and Functional consultant for which it is willing to incur maximum of INR 30 Lacs in CTC in total. The following candidate profiles are received, unfortunately they are all jumbled up and no one is sure who has applied for which role. :wacko:

    The following are the candidates:

    1. Sakshi Sinha – Age 27, Work ex-2 yrs, No. of companies worked for – 1, Key skill : People management, Expected CTC – 12 Lacs

    2. Sadaf Zia – Age 26 , Work ex – 20 months, Key skill: Sharp programmer, awarded by Microsoft for exceptional programming skills, Expected CTC – unknown

    3. Raj Singh – Age 33, Work ex – 10 years , Key skill – Excellent project manager, No. of companies worked for – 12, Expected CTC – 24 Lacs

    4. Peter Parker – Age 43 years, Work ex- 15 yrs, Key skills – Excellent technical and Managerial skills, Ex-CTO . No. of companies worked for: 2. Expected CTC – 28 Lacs

    5. Vinod Rai – Age 20 years, Workex – 0, Key skills – C++ Coding , Expected CTC – 4 Lacs

    6. Prerna Rai – Age 29 years , work ex- 6 years , Key skills – Functional and Technical , No. of companies worked for : 1, Expected CTC – 16 Lacs

    Arakansas is also keen to see if more people can be hired within the budget. The company is facing a slight funding crisis but is expected to recover from it.

    As a team discuss and come to a consensus on who should be hired for your client .

    In the given case we have to select two candidates for the role of project manager and financial consultant and company  can incur maximum od 30 lakhs in CTC.

    Roles of project manager includes planning ,organising,controlling,motivating team,developing budget that satisfies clients and risks  involved in project.According to me prerna rai will be the right candidate for project manager since she has work ex of 6 years ,she will be effective in coomunicating with team and because of her both functional and technical skills,she will be able to manage the team well ,can understand client needs and can evaluate the problems ,risks involved. she can aslo apply her technical knowledge wherever requires.Aso her expected package is 16 lacs which is convenient for the company.

    Now, the job of financial consultant is more of a technical one.I think sadaf zia fulfills the requirement of the job . Since she is a sharp progrmmer and has a wor ex of 20 months can design the software acc to client demand. also comapny can provide her package of 10-12 lacs.

    so i think these two candidates will be suitable for the job and also ctc is under the company’s budget .

    also we can hire vinod rai. though he doesnot have experience but has knowldege of c++. Aslo his CTC is 4 lacs . so it will be good for a company to hire an additional student with some technical knowledge

    We would prefer to hire Raj for Project Manager post as he has prior experience of managing the team.As Raj would be working for the client it’s better to have someone with managerial experience and out of all resumes, Raj seems to be the best bet for Project Manager.Although, the expected CTC is 24 Lakhs will try to negotiate and cut down by 2-4 lakhs.(Max Salary Range: 20-22 lakhs)

    For the Functional Consultant role, we would prefer Sadaf with the key skills in place it would be easy for him to get into the functional consultant role.In terms of salary, we can negotiate as he has just 20 months of experience but with his skills in mind, we will try to be fair to him.(Max Salary Range: 5- 8 lakhs)

    If the above salary projections go well then with the remaining salary we can surely hire Vinod.As he is a fresher negotiating salary won’t be a problem.Moreover, we can actually train Vinod technically and get a lot out of him which will be a win-win situation for both.

    Here we need to look at the viable options.

    According to me, Raj Singh is not a good option. Although Raj Singh has an experience of 10 years and is an excellent project manager, looking at the no.of companies he has worked for,i.e 12, we can safely say that he doesnt stay at one company for too long. So Raj Singh is not a viable option if they are planning for the long term.

    I think, they should go for the experience of Sakshi Singh, Prerna Rai and the relatively raw talent of Sadaf and Vinod. Sakshi can manage people well and Prerna has the technical and functional skills. Sakshi should be hired as the project manager and Prerna as the functional consultant. Prerna can also help out and teach Sakshi the  basic technical things needed for a project management. Sadaf and Vinod should be hired to help out prerna and learn a thing or two from her and also from each other.This way the company can also plan for the longer term.

    As far the Budget the concerned , they can explain their funding crisis and that they hope to get out of it soon. This will help them negotiate a salary less than their expectation explaining that they will meet their expectations as soon as they resolve their funding issue.

    As of now ( all in lakhs)

    Sakshi-  max 10  Prerna- max 14, Sadaf- max 4, Vinod- max 2

    Another option would be Peter Parker,Sadaf, Vindo

    Peter Parker- hugely experienced guy. Worked for 2 companies over a span of 15 years which speaks for his loyalty. Also he has both managerial and technical skills. He should be primarily hired as a project manager.

    He secondary job would be to help out the functional consultant Sadaf and Vinod when needed since they are both relatively inexperienced.

    As for the CTC ,they can again explain their funding crisis just as in the previous option.

    Peter- 24 ,Sadaf-4, Vinod-2

    I would prefer the first option since the second option would put too much pressure on one person and the productivity may fall

    My role is hire the best candidate suitable for the post of Project Manager and Functional Consultant.

    For the post of Project Manager I am looking for someone who -1.Headed a project before

    2. Should have minimum 4 years of experience.

    3. Should have technical expertise as well good communication skills.

    4. Should have a valid reason to leave his/her previous job.

    5.Should be vibrant,young and know how to take a project to completion with all finacial constraints.

    6. Should be within our budget that is 30 lacs

    Sakshi sinha is young but she has only 2 years experience and has no technical expertise, so she is not suitable for this job.

    Sadaf Zia has only 20 months experience and although he is a techinal expert, he does not have leaded a project before and has no experience of team management.

    Raj Singh although a good project manager has already left 12 jobs and he is just 33 years old. This reflects that he is not stable in his job and investing in him is risky and our company is going through finanacial problems so every decision should be well thought

    Vinod Rai is a young fresher and he is not ready to handle a team.

    Peter parker is 43 years old and he has a lot of experience so for him to adjust in a startup environment will be difficult.

    Prerna Rai has six years experience, she has worked for the same company all those years. She has technical as well as fcunctional expertise and has learnt quite a lot about working in a team before. So she is the suitable candidate for the job of project manager. Her CTC is 16 lacs amd therefore, she is well within our budget as well.

    For the post of functional consultant.A candidate should have technical as well fuctional expertise. Should have atleast one year of experience and has given good results as a functional consultant in his previous job.

    Sadaf zia is an excellent programmer and has 20 months of experience. He is young and sharp enough to learn and adjust in a startup environment so he should be chosen for the post of functional consultant.

    Vinod rai is young fresher and excellent coder, he can learn faster and code well, as a coder is also required to make a project. He should also be hired.

    I mostly agree with the first option that Debleen has put forward but I think hiring just three people: Sakshi, Prerna and Sadaf would be a better option. We see Sadaf is very skilled and the company could make good use of her programming skills. She also has some work experience. On the other hand, since Vinod does not have work-experience and we don’t know how good he is at coding, the company may have to spend additional resources in training him.

    Since we have a budget constraint, these three choices seem safe and we won’t have to negotiate too much regarding CTC. Hiring Sakshi for 11(max), Prerna for 15(max) and Sadaf for 4 can be reasonably managed.

    your choice is not viable

    as sakshi is able to manage people well but tasks of a project manager is not only limited to team mangement. It requires technical knowledge like the budget related issue and other  technical risks.

    Also 4 lacs for sadaf would be very less.Earlier she must be earning 4 lacs .And now she has gained more knowledge,so she wont be satisfy with 4 lacs and couldnot be able to perform her effectively and efficiently .

    so instead of hiring 4 candidates

    we can select 3

    prerna as project manger

    sadaf as financial consultant

    and vinod, who can assist sadaf
