As people say, the most challenging part of any journey is to take the initiative. With the same vision, few students of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur supported by some generous faculty members, founded the Education project for the underprivileged kids at Bihari More (name coined due to presence of Bihari immigrants) near the NIT Campus in 2009. It is a fully volunteer driven project which was initially meant for imparting basic education; however, in the course of time has turned into a revolution, empowering about 80 underprivileged students of Durgapur. It is being funded by NITD alumni, professors and well wishers.
The students of the institute teach these children in the evenings and also during the weekends and holidays. Personal care is extended to every child. Even the institute has extended full support by providing the access to the classrooms and some other facilities. All these children have been registered into various schools. Along with that, the meritorious ones have been provided with the best facilities for their growth including full scholarship and entry to best schools of the city.
BMEP also organizes free medical checkup for them and provides free medicines. A special awareness initiative has been taken recently to educate these children with the basic sanitation needs and key measures have been taken to improve it. This got featured in the cover page of IMPACT magazine by Michigan Tech University.
A special child, Sunita, who is partially deaf and mute since birth, has been admitted to SAHAS, a school for children with special needs. Every initiative is being taken to make sure that she leads a normal life. She has been taught sign language and has been provided with hearing aids to improve her hearing capacity.
Apart from education, BMEP also focuses on extracurricular activities and entertainment for these gifted kids who are being trained to present themselves in various cultural programmes including the cultural fest of NITD. To enhance their creative skills, various competitions are also organised. They are always a part of all major festivals celebrated at the campus.
BMEP strictly believes that every child should get the opportunity to launch themselves into the world and, to be successful in their endeavors; they need a platform to begin. Thus, it works for providing this platform to the underprivileged children in chasing their dreams and achieving success in their own terms.
BMEP has been featured on YourStory.com, UNICEF, Michigan Tech IMPACT Magazine, Axis Bank ‘My Idea of Progress’, Being Human Foundation, etc to name a few. It is a registered Self-Help-Group (SHG, Welfare Society) under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act. Currently, BMEP plans to expand its operations to the other institutes of the country with the help of dynamic volunteers who can visualize our vision. This article calls for volunteers who would love to see underprivileged kids to chase their dreams with the help of BMEP.
