Xavier Institute of Management, Xavier University, Bhubaneswar celebrated the 69th Independence Day with much pump and fervour with different activities conducted by administration as well as the students. The National Flag was hoisted by the Vice Chancellor and Director, Fr. Paul Fernandes SJ, at both the campuses of Xavier University. The flag hoisting ceremony saw participation from the students, faculty members, other staff members and the Security Squad. At the XIMB campus Prof. Ranjan Dasgupta highlighted the problems India is facing today such as corruption, poverty, illiteracy etc. Invoking the thoughts of the late former president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, he said that “the vision of India is to transform itself from a developing economy to a developed economy by making integrated efforts in the areas of agriculture, food processing, power and information and telecommunications technology”. Professor Elizabeth Abba in her inspiring speech at the Xavier City campus enlightened everyone about the Paika Mutiny and the contribution of Odia heroes in the struggle for Independence. This was followed by speeches by the students highlighting the role of the youth towards a powerful nation building and development. The students focussed on prevalent social evils, the fear among people of raising a voice against them and how present day India’s problem lies not in ‘building new states, but building a rational state of mind’. They also highlighted issues faced by the youth today such as depression and suicides which are on the rise. The ceremony ended with a vote of thanks by the Administrative Officer, Mr. Basant Mohanty and the rendition of the National Anthem.
On this occasion, Nukkad Natak was performed by the students showcasing the plight of the less privileged people during the pre independence period and how people at present still face the problems of corruption, gender and caste biasness. It concluded with the message that the light of hope binds us together and India can shine if the youth channelize all the vitality and energy towards the creating a “Brighter Tomorrow”. Celebrating the sportsmanship among the students and the faculty members, a cricket match was organised between the faculty and the students which witnessed great enthusiasm from both the teams.
On the Independence Day eve, the Social Responsibility Cell of XIMB had organised events in both the campuses to re-enforce the spirit of patriotism. The events comprised of inspirational speeches by students, Mess Staff, video presentation, group song and flash mob, followed by a candle march.
