January 21, 2015 at 1:51 pm #2903Nikhil BahraniParticipantI would like to initiate the discussion. First of all what is facebook.Facebook is a social networking site where we can connect with people. It touches many lives nowadays which is shown by crores of accounts. It is affecting indian culture as well. Everything has its pros and cons. It is adversely affecting indian culture by promoting western culture, creating distances etc but also benefitting by helping people connect with their loved ones who lives at distant places as indian culture unculcates lots of love among people. It is also helping poor people by allowing them enjoy the things they cant afford like education through fb groups, free calling etc which is also an imp. part of indian culture. It is a source of information. When our society rejects a person he can take help of fb,the virtual world to give him hope. Hence inspite of having varios cons facebook is benefitting the indian culture not only to sustain but also helping it to grow.
January 21, 2015 at 4:04 pm #2904Anant SanganeriaParticipantFacebook is a platform wherein people from various backgrounds can connect and share their experiences. It has come a long way from being a portal for youngsters to share their photos and get maximum likes. It has become an information sharing hub. As per the latest stats Facebook has contributed over 200 billion to the world economy and has also created many jobs. Indians have over 100 million accounts on Facebook which not only includes common man but also politicians, actors, sportsmen etc. Our culture has been affected significantly by Facebook. It was an important tool used by the BJP during their election campaigning period. Mr. Modi is an active user on Facebook and uses it to shares his thoughts. It has brought people close to their government. Moreover it has also become a platform to share the atrocities and the problems faced by a common man. The movement started by Anna Hazare gained its momentum via Facebook. Recently the McDonald’s case in Pune was a highlight and the its immediate effect was the shutting down of the outlet and investigation. Furthermore the Digital India Initiative started by our PM can become a huge success if Facebook lends a helping hand. Mark Zuckerburg during his meeting with India praised the scheme of digital India. If the technology is used properly Facebook can connect the villages with the cities which would in turn foster development of the rural people. I would like to conclude by stating that Facebook is not destroying our culture instead it is re-shaping it and influencing the world.
January 21, 2015 at 4:33 pm #2905Shreeja DasParticipantThere is always two sides of the same coin. Similarly, in this case, Facebook which on one hand is an easy way of communication and getting in touch with people , on the other hand also it is becoming an element to break family relationships. Recently, social networking sites are being blamed for marital discords due to lack of trust. But then responsibility lies with the user. Knife was not invented to cut throat. No one can change your ethics, belief and culture without your own agreement.
January 21, 2015 at 9:36 pm #2906Pritam MukherjeeParticipantAs Shreeja said, every good thing accompanies some negatives. But, we should consider and concentrate on the larger positives. FB gives us an opportunity, like never before, to connect with the world and to network. What we should take from the foreign culture is absolutely our own choice given the fact that we are matured adults. Is this fair to state that FB, which is less than a decade old can really destroy our culture which is the result of thousands of years. If yes, probably our culture was never solid enough. Whether to accept the western culture or not or as we mostly do, modify the western culture as per our requirement as then follow it, it is absolutely upto us. Having said that, we must look into how fb can actually add up to the Indian culture.

While I do not disagree with your statements, this was an opportunity for you to speak in favor of the motion after the points made by the first two gentleman. In topics like these, speaking in favor of the motion will grant you more points as few will take the stand. By the way this was an actual GD topic at NMIMS in 2011 ( they used to conduct GD in those days).
