Around 596 students from 25 countries participated in a rhapsody of 14 different cultural and sports events at Utopia 2016, the International Cultural Fest of Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) Bengaluru, held on 31 st July, 2016. The students were predominantly from countries like Nigeria, Afghanistan, Nepal, Mauritius, Congo, etc. Just as each colour is needed to form a rainbow, every culture is needed to complete the spectrum of mankind. And that was the theme of Utopia 2016 – ‘Imaginem Plena’ which means The Complete Spectrum.

“I really like the theme. It means bringing people of various nationalities together onto one platform to give them an opportunity to showcase their talents and diversity which is not that easy.” said Sougour Hassan Ahmat, President of FISA B (Federation of International Students Association – Bengaluru), from Chad, Africa.

Padma Bhushan Dr. S.B.Mujumdar, the founder of Symbiosis International University, had a vision to promote the welfare of International students studying in India and therefore he started Symbiosis with the motto ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. SIBM Bengaluru conducts Utopia every year on his birthday, 31 st July, to honour his vision. The day started with a fusion of Indian and Western cultural performances. This was followed by a sizzling Ramp Walk in which students from different colleges set the stage on fire. The winning team – ‘Biodegradable’, from Bishop Cotton Women’s Christian College had an eco-friendly theme ‘Poupees de Papier’ where they flaunted clothes decorated with newspapers. Team ‘Panache’ from Jain University finished as the runners up. Simultaneously sports lovers had their share of fun by participating and spectating in sports events – Alley Oop (Basketball) and Goaltastic (Futsal). The team from St. Hopkins College secured the winner’s trophy in Goaltastic event, but not before they were given a run for their money by team CMS from Jain University, who finished as the runners up. The International Food Festival was a treat for the foodies as they could taste various cuisines of the world.

The Mime, performed by Jzaa – the Dramatics Club of SIBM Bengaluru, was the one of most mesmerizing performances of the Fest, wherein they enacted a beautiful script on ‘Lives may fade, Smile shall never’, moving the audience to tears. Talentino, the performing arts event under Utopia, saw Jain University emerge victorious, while Indus Business Academy finished as the runners up. As the evening progressed, the audience were enthralled by songs, dances and special talents showcased during the event. Utopia 2016 also witnessed a Flash Mob by Jhankaar (The Dance Club of SIBMB), ‘Minute to Win it’ games, and PS4 Gaming competition. ‘afterdark War of the DJs’ was one of the iconic events at Utopia 2016, in which a head-on collision of the coolest DJs was witnessed by the audience as they grooved to their beats.

Syed Mujtaba, coordinator of IRC (the organizing committee) said “We had scintillating performances depicting various traditions. The participation was very encouraging and yet again, proved that Utopia is one of the most favoured college fest in the city. This is what Symbiosis International University stands for, to promote global diversity and harmony.” We would like to thank Hard Rock Café for presenting ‘afterdark War of the DJs’ powered by Resonance Studios, Pantaloons – our fashion partner, Adore Unisex Salon – our styling partner, PlayStation – our gaming partner and News 9 our Media partner. As the fest came to an end, the folks at SIBM Bengaluru once again drove home the message “We were born in different shades, but now we come together to form the complete spectrum”.
